As you are aware, significant acts of school violence all across the country have created a source of concern for families, our county’s school districts and the law enforcement community. Unfortunately, these issues are becoming so pervasive that we need to do everything we can preemptively to address this problem. In this endeavor, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office has recommended partnering with school districts to create Sheriff’s Sub-Stations within our schools. It is our expectation that creating a routine police presence in these buildings will act as a deterrent. This initiative will also facilitate stronger relationships with students, school staff and parents and provide us an opportunity to obtain pertinent information that may be used proactively to prevent an act of school violence. Protecting our schools from school violence requires involvement, teamwork, and sound planning.
Stamford Central School was one of the first to sign up for this exciting program. Your school has provided us with office space, a telephone and a computer with internet access. Moreover, each deputy will be provided a building access pass and keys to the room to enable immediate access to the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Should an emergency situation arise, our deputies will have the means to enter your school.
Deputy Timothy Murray will be the primary deputy assigned to Stamford Central School. However, all deputies shall check into the school sub-stations once a week as activity permits. They shall check into the main school office whenever entering the building to advise administration of their presence. Deputies are strongly encouraged to utilize this space to conduct routine office functions and perform building walk-throughs accordingly. Deputies will not use the space to process arrests and/or perform other non-school related criminal investigations.
Since it is our strong desire to enhance the safety of our schools, this new initiative is of high priority to the Sheriff’s Office. We are excited about strengthening our existing relationships and look forward to partnering with you in this endeavor. Please feel free to contact Undersheriff Craig DuMond at 607-746-2336 if you would like to discuss this matter further.
Very truly yours,
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Thomas E. Mills
