The Stamford Central Board of Education is committed to maintaining an open and transparent relationship with the community. In response to recent inquiries regarding board operations and public participation, the District wishes to provide clarity on the legal frameworks and scheduling protocols that govern Board of Education activity. To ensure all residents can participate in the democratic process, the Board would like to highlight several key aspects of its operations: ● Predictable meeting schedules: To encourage maximum public attendance, Board of Education meetings are consistently held on the second Thursday of every month. These dates are finalized and posted a year in advance on the official school district calendar to allow for long-term planning by community members. ● Democratic Representation: The Board operates on staggered three-year terms. This structure ensures institutional stability while providing the community with regular opportunities for change, with 1 to 2 seats becoming available for election every year. ● Public Comment Guidelines: While the Board highly values community input, it must operate within the legal boundaries set by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA). By law, the Board is prohibited from responding to public comments regarding:
• Confidential personnel matters
• Sensitive legal information or ongoing litigation
• Specific details regarding union contracts or active salary negotiations The Board’s primary goal is to remain accessible while upholding our legal and ethical obligations to the District. While certain topics—particularly those involving personnel or negotiations—must remain confidential to protect the District and its employees, we remain dedicated to a process that is fair, legal, and predictable, with room for growth and opportunity. Regarding labor relations, the District maintains a dedicated negotiations committee. This committee meets regularly with legal counsel and representatives from the teachers' union to ensure that contract discussions are handled with the necessary professional oversight and confidentiality. For more information on upcoming meetings, candidate petitions, or board policies, please visit the District website at stamfordcs.org
